Painting Wild Workshop with Viv Rainsbury

'Go Large' on this whole day workshop where you will be exploring more contemporary ways of painting wildlife in acrylics. You will be using big brushes on a big canvas. Suitable for all levels.

Big Sky Workshop with Lorraine Auton

This whole day workshop using acrylics on a large canvas will guide the group to produce a stormy sky in the morning session. A light buffet lunch and drinks will follow this. The afternoon session will involve the participants in creating a foreground of their choice to go on the sky they have produced. Everyone will need to bring their own canvas, ideally 3ft by 2ft (92cm by 61cm), or similar size. Cost including lunch: £50

Session 1:  ANCIENT HOLLOWAY.

Holloways are centuries old thoroughfares worn down by travellers over time. We will use heavy bodied acrylic medium to build a layered painting which should give the dimensional effect of a leafy tunnel. Stages will be demonstrated. Old clothes advisable.

Interpret your own idea from the title or use my reference photos to illustrate reflections using the popular pen and watercolour wash technique.

Session 3:  TRUMPET SHAPED FLOWERS.

Working on form again, we will be using soft pastels on coloured pastel paper and some useful tips and tricks to create the shape of delicate trumpet shaped flowers. For those who don't like pastel, you can use watercolour pencils instead.

This session will focus upon pencil or charcoal still life drawing practice, using a beach inspired arrangement (but, due to the weather, probably not on an actual beach).

Session 5:  POINTILLISM - After Seurat

Create an image of your choice, fully out of dots of broken colour. This is a good exercise for improving colour use. The medium is yet to be decided.

LIFE DRAWING - NUDE

We hope to hold regular life drawing sessions using both male and female models. These will be mostly untutored, although some help and guidance will always be on hand. Please let me know if you don't have your own easel / drawing board and we'll try to arrange some.

Parental permission required if under 18.

Session 1:  KINGFISHER IN ACRYLIC.

Acrylic technique with a range of brushwork. Following a similar style to our bluetit painting but with a bit of room for your own development and imagination as you choose  your own setting. A little bit of splashing if you want. . . Stages demonstrated. Old clothes advisable.

Session 2:  PORTRAITS.

An introduction to drawing the human face with pencil or charcoal, focusing on proportion, light and shade. Either draw the face of a willing companion, your own face using a mirror or copy a photo of an interesting face that you've brought in. Some photos can be provided if needed.

Session 3:  SUNSET.

Produce either a representational or abstract picture, following a colour theory recap and a basic introduction into abstract. We will use a vibrant blending of colour (mixed media) which can either be representative or abstract and experiment with metal leaf, if desired. Help and guidance will be on hand. Old clothes advisable if choosing acrylic.

Session 4:  GOING BIG. 

Create a large than life still-life. This is likely to push some of you out of your comfort zone but is a really useful exercise for achieving correct proportions and freeing up your drawing skills. We will use charcoal, pastel or pencil on large size sugar paper.

Session 5:  'INSIDE LOOKING OUT'

Using everyone's favourite medium, pen and wash, but this time the subject is open to your own interpretation. I will have a range of reference photos, if needed, and relevant techniques can be demonstrated as we go.
